With more than 18,000 inhabitants, it is the second most populous municipality in the province, and capital of Terra de Lemos comarca and the Ribeira Sacra. Its business park, O Reboredo has strategically important location for the interior of Galicia, with 365,675m² and twenty companies from different sectors. The main economic activities in this municipality are industrial services, construction and transport. The latter is developing thanks to its geographical location, communication routes and the construction of a dry dock in the north-east of the city.
