The Regional Minister for Economy and Industry, María Jesús Lorenzana, announced today that the Xunta will convey to the Government the critical issues identified at the logistics support roundtable set up by the Galician Institute for Economic Promotion (Igape) to monitor Galician companies operating in the Middle East.
During a visit to the facilities of Papelera de Brandía in Santiago de Compostela, Lorenzana advocated prudence and waiting to see the measures that the Government will approve at the extraordinary Council of Ministers next Friday.
In this regard, the Regional Minister reported that she has been in contact in recent days with the Secretary of State for Industry, Jordi García, whom she thanked for being “most willing” to collaborate in “mitigating something that is currently conjunctural but is already having a significant impact from the point of view of logistics or energy costs”.
“What we agreed is that, after seeing what is approved at the Council of Ministers, if there is any critical issue in any productive sector or company in Galicia, we will convey it,” she said. She thus announced that by the end of this week the data requested at the logistics support roundtable convened on 10 March will be available, from where all affected sectors in Galicia are being monitored to ascertain first-hand the impact of the Middle East conflict on their export activity.
Nevertheless, Lorenzana stressed that support measures must be adopted at national level because “it is not an issue for any autonomous community” but for Spain and the European trade bloc.
Papelera de Brandía
With regard to the visit to Papelera de Brandía, the Regional Minister highlighted that it is one of Galicia’s longest-established family businesses, which works with natural resources, incorporates a great deal of technology and innovation in its processes and is highly internationalised as it exports to countries all over the world.
It is a company, she said, that embodies the objectives that the Xunta is pursuing with the Business Innovation Strategy of Galicia 2026-2028, approved at the end of last year, and with the Internationalisation Strategy, which she described as essential in such a complicated geopolitical context, where she also stressed that industrial policy must be linked to energy policy.
