The President of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, called today for continuing to promote in Galicia an industrial ecosystem based on “sustainability and the circular economy”.
He made this statement this afternoon at the inauguration of Cortizo’s new recycling and casting plant in Coirós, at which he was accompanied by the Regional Minister for Economy and Industry, María Jesús Lorenzana. With this new facility, the family business is taking a further step in its commitment to waste reuse and management, while setting an example to continue boosting this strategy among the rest of Galicia’s industries.
“It is a pleasure that Galician companies that started very gradually now have this size and still clearly understand that the secret lies in doing things well,” he pointed out, while noting that “it is possible to keep growing, keep manufacturing, and increasingly respect the environment more, despite the obstacles that some would love to impose”.
In this regard, he thanked the company for this investment of nearly 40 million euros “and for doing it here, in rural areas” and for its commitment to continue growing, as it helps to enhance the Galicia Calidade brand, “which has to be much more than landscapes and gastronomy, which of course it is, but above all it is the things that are done well here and of which we are proud and which then make a huge number of people recognise us in so many places around the world”.
Support initiatives
In fact, the head of the regional executive emphasised the importance of having practical benchmarks, such as this plant, to continue promoting sustainability among the production fabric.
Among other initiatives, the Galician Government approved the new Waste Management Plan for Industrial Waste in Galicia (PRIGA) in 2024, which will mobilise 75 million euros up to 2030 with the aim of advancing businesses in the circular economy and reducing waste. Under this plan, a pioneering advisory office for industries has been created with the aim of guiding and orienting them throughout this process.
In addition, the Galician Government is working to streamline and reduce environmental processing times, while maintaining the utmost rigour and stringency. This line of work will be reflected in the future Simplified Environmental Administration Act, which completed the public hearing and information procedure last month.
