The president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, today highlighted the important role played by family businesses in the good performance of the Galician economy, as they account for more than 80% of all private sector employment in the region and contribute more than 85% of the wealth generated there, providing over 40.8 billion euros to Galicia’s GDP.

“Having a family base means that investments have much greater perspective, greater security and a stronger commitment to the country,” he stated during his participation in the gala marking the 25th anniversary of the Galician Association of Family Business (AGEF), which brings together the 60 leading family-owned companies in the autonomous community.

During his speech, the head of the Galician Executive pledged the support of the Xunta to continue driving the economic activity of these companies and, in general, of the entire productive fabric. “Entrepreneurs create wealth and employment and largely shape a country’s future,” he stressed, while acknowledging the role of family businesses in promoting “the Galicia brand, everything that is done here.” “The family business is Galicia Calidade in its purest form,” he remarked.

Among the measures to support the sector, Rueda highlighted the Xunta’s commitment to cutting and streamlining bureaucracy – through measures such as the forthcoming Simplified Environmental Administration Act or the Galician Economic Office –; the drive to strengthen social dialogue, which is being worked on with a view to institutionalising it for the first time through a decree; and the promotion of training for employment, via various measures to make it more flexible and adapt it to the real needs of companies.
