The Regional Minister for Economy and Industry, María Jesús Lorenzana, today described as essential the role played by the ICT industry in the growth and competitiveness of businesses in Galicia and in the modernisation of the services provided by public administrations.
Lorenzana, accompanied by the Secretary General for Industry and Energy Development, Nicolás Vázquez, took part today in the presentation of the ICT Industry Master Plan 2026–2028, which allocates 62 million euros in aid up to 2028 and includes 77 measures to promote the sector.
The minister highlighted the upward trend reflected in all its indicators in recent years, with growth of 21 per cent since 2020. There are currently 23,467 registered workers employed in more than 3,100 companies operating in this sector in Galicia, which represents 4,000 more jobs (20 per cent more) than six years ago.
The objective, she said, is to foster growth and achieve companies of greater scale so that the ICT industry can enhance non-technological businesses in Galicia. It also aims to encourage collaborative R&D&I projects in quantum technologies and artificial intelligence, and to develop a data strategy within the regional public sector in order to continue optimising resource management and improving citizen services.
“We do not intend to produce long-term strategies or particularly complex documents that end up in a drawer,” she said. “What we aim to do is create guidelines for public-private collaboration and define the support that the Administration will provide to each sector over a two- to three-year period,” she added. In this regard, she expressed her gratitude for the collaboration of the ICT Cluster in drafting this master plan, which she considered key to ensuring that these documents are truly effective instruments.
Lorenzana concluded by stating that ICT networks, which underpin digital connectivity, are currently a critical infrastructure and that investing in information and communication technologies should be regarded as investing in industrial sovereignty.
