The President of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, highlighted the 27th Conxemar Exhibition as a major showcase for Galicia’s global strength in fishing, seafood production and processing. He also stressed the opportunity it offers the sector to do business, “build commercial and personal relationships and open up new markets”.

Speaking at the International Frozen Seafood Exhibition, which runs until Thursday in Vigo, the President noted that the event brings together freezing companies, processors, distributors and supporting industries from around the world. He said it helps strengthen Galicia’s position as a leader in the seafood industry and “establish Vigo as the true home port for global maritime business across all five continents”. He also highlighted that Galicia accounts for 34% of Spain’s seafood processing companies and 48% of the sector’s total turnover.

The President described Galicia’s seafood industry as an example of the Galicia Calidade that defines and distinguishes the region. He reaffirmed the Xunta’s commitment to supporting this vital sector of the Galician economy as it faces new challenges, including increased international competition and changing consumer habits. “We will always pull together to support our seafood products. Much of our future and our economy depends on them. Galicia’s future depends, to a large extent, on the future of the maritime industry,” he said.

He recalled that Galicia has long advocated measures at European level to ensure the future viability and sustainability of fishing across the continent and safeguard Europe’s food sovereignty and food security. Rueda called for “competition on a level playing field” with other countries and for the seafood industry to “serve as a strategic pillar in ensuring supply”, stressing that the sector has a direct interest in preserving resources.

He also highlighted the Xunta’s commitment to promoting fresh and frozen seafood from Galicia’s rías to reach more consumers, with a particular focus on younger people.
