The President of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, today advocated building a competitive and industrial Galicia, a path on which he drew attention to the importance of projects such as the Chinese multinational SAIC, which has just chosen the region as its base in Europe. “It is a great collective achievement and a sign that things are being done well here,” he stated during his participation in the 5th Economic Forum La Galicia que viene, organised by El Español, Quincemil, Treintayseis and Invertia.
The commitment of the Chinese automotive company will entail an investment of 200 million euros and the creation of 2,300 jobs in an initial phase. In the medium term, it will make it possible to turn the Ferrolterra area into a leading industrial and logistics hub. Rueda specified that behind this investment there is very intensive work and that it is only possible thanks to the prior efforts of a territory that offers “institutional stability and a good climate between administrations”.
Rueda also highlighted the commitment the Xunta is making to “harness Galicia’s potential” in the field of energy. “We have energy sources that will be the oil of the future, such as water, wind, minerals…,” the President stated, emphasising that it is essential to produce energy “to supply the industries” already established in the region and to attract new projects.
Furthermore, in his speech, Rueda recalled that Galicia is consolidating its position as a benchmark in R&D and that the Government supports measures to “attract investment and retain talent”. All with the aim of building a more competitive Galicia and a leader in different fields, while not renouncing maintaining “the high level of public services” such as education, healthcare and social policies.
Finally, he referred to the next Xacobeo, which will be held next year. In addition to the record influx of visitors expected and its economic impact, Rueda pointed out that the event will also serve for the whole world to recognise the capacity, talent and potential of the autonomous community. “It will be the great showcase of Galicia to the world, a country brand and of Galicia Calidade,” he stated.
