Santiago de Compostela, 4 October 2026
The President of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, recently held an official meeting with the British Ambassador to Spain, Alex Ellis, during which he highlighted the strength of bilateral trade, which consistently generates a trade surplus for Galicia.
The meeting took place in O Grove during the La Toja–Atlantic Link Forum and was also attended by the Regional Minister for Economy and Industry, María Jesús Lorenzana. It provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on the current geopolitical situation and review trade relations between Galicia and the United Kingdom. Rueda highlighted Galicia’s position as a reliable and competitive industrial and trading partner in the current European and international context.
They also reviewed opportunities for economic and industrial cooperation in sectors of strategic importance to Galicia’s economy, including automotive manufacturing and components, agri-food, shipbuilding, renewable energy and biotechnology.
Looking ahead to Xacobeo 2027, the President and the Ambassador discussed the deep cultural and tourism ties that connect the two regions through the Camino de Santiago. Rueda noted that international pilgrims now account for the majority of those arriving in Santiago de Compostela, with the United Kingdom ranking sixth among countries of origin: more than 13,000 Compostela pilgrimage certificates have been recorded for British pilgrims so far this year. He encouraged both sides to use the Holy Year as an opportunity to strengthen these ties further and welcome thousands of visitors from the British Isles.
