A Coruña, 17 August 2026

The Director of Igape, Covadonga Toca, today championed Galician fashion as one of the established strategic sectors on which Galicia can continue to build its economic growth, promoting innovation as a tool to strengthen companies’ competitiveness and address the transformation currently taking place in the markets.

Toca Carús took part in the opening of Galicia conversa: Anatomy of Galician Fashion, an event held at Studio Follow in A Coruña which brought together a range of voices linked to design, entrepreneurship, production, brand building, distribution, retail and internationalisation. In this context, she noted that behind a garment, a collection or a brand lies a value chain encompassing “business, industry, technology, internationalisation, employment, talent and the capacity to innovate”.

The Director highlighted Galicia’s considerable tradition and business expertise in fashion, as well as an ecosystem comprising large companies, SMEs, emerging brands, designers, suppliers and professionals. She stressed that this established base is an advantage when it comes to addressing the sector’s new challenges.

Toca Carús explored a broad concept of innovation, which involves not only creating something new but also transforming what businesses already do well. In this respect, she identified opportunities including the adoption of new materials and processes, the digitalisation of production, new ways of marketing and engaging with consumers, sustainability, market expansion and new brand-building strategies.

She also placed this process within the objective of “industrialising innovation”: bringing good ideas to market so that they can become businesses and projects capable of growing, competing and generating economic activity and employment. To achieve this, she highlighted the importance of having ecosystems that connect different perspectives and areas of knowledge throughout the value chain.

Finally, the Director of Igape stressed the importance of maintaining an ongoing dialogue with the business community in order to understand from within the changes affecting the industry, identify new opportunities and determine companies’ needs in order to continue growing.
